Artist Spotlight: Ted Bertrand-- Capturing Cajun Country in Bold Color

Erin Ducote

At 318 Art & Frame, we’re proud to highlight the work of Louisiana artist Ted Bertrand—a painter whose vibrant storytelling and bold brushstrokes bring the soul of South Louisiana to life. With each canvas, Ted captures the unmistakable charm of Cajun culture, creating pieces that resonate deeply with anyone who’s ever felt at home under Spanish moss, beside bayou waters, or in the warm glow of a front porch light.

Ted Bertrand hails from rural Opelousas, Louisiana, where his love for art and storytelling first took root. A natural-born creative, Ted began drawing and taking photographs at a young age, fascinated by the textures and colors of the world around him. Though his path led him through many careers—including construction, sales, and social work—it was his two decades as a middle and high school teacher that truly solidified his connection to creativity and community. After retiring from teaching in 2012, Ted returned full-time to painting, embracing his roots and channeling a lifetime of observation into his artwork.

Ted’s paintings are unmistakably his own: lively, expressive, and rich with Louisiana character. He primarily works in acrylic, using vivid color palettes and dynamic compositions to capture everything from shotgun houses and seafood shacks to marshes teeming with egrets and cypress trees. Whether he's painting a quiet scene on Bayou Little Teche or a bright “Pop Color Cajun House,” Ted infuses his work with storytelling—each piece offering a glimpse into the places and people that define our region. His subjects are familiar, yet his style makes them feel freshly seen.

Here at 318 Art & Frame, we’re currently showcasing a selection of Ted’s latest work, including pieces that explore both his love of rural architecture and the quiet beauty of Louisiana’s natural landscape. His paintings are full of texture, movement, and memory—whether it’s a weathered home with peeling paint or the sun casting golden light across the marsh. These works invite you to slow down and savor the beauty of everyday moments in the South.

What makes Ted such a great fit for 318 is his deep connection to the culture and spirit of Louisiana. His art doesn’t just depict scenes—it celebrates them. He brings an authenticity and warmth that aligns perfectly with our mission to support artists who tell meaningful, local stories through their work. Ted’s paintings speak to both longtime locals and new admirers of Louisiana alike.

We invite you to come experience the vibrant world of Ted Bertrand in person at 318 Art & Frame, or browse his work online.
