Artist Spotlight: John Marc Anderson-- Architectural Memories, Cast in Relief

Erin Ducote

At 318 Art & Frame, we’re proud to showcase the work of John Marc Anderson—a sculptor whose intricate bas-relief art brings the soul of New Orleans architecture to life. His work immediately draws you in with its craftsmanship, texture, and reverence for the buildings and landmarks that shape Louisiana’s identity. Whether you’re a longtime local or new to the South, John Marc’s creations strike a chord of memory, beauty, and cultural pride.

Born into a military family, John Marc Anderson grew up moving often, experiencing a variety of places and cultures before eventually settling in the Washington, DC area. After studying at the University of Maryland, he began developing his unique approach to sculpture—blending traditional carving with modern techniques. He later made Louisiana his home, drawn to the region’s rich architectural heritage and vibrant spirit. Today, he lives and works in Mandeville, just across the lake from New Orleans, where he continues to shape his distinctive style.

John Marc’s medium is as unique as his subjects. He begins by hand-carving polystyrene foam to create a detailed bas-relief, then uses advanced 3D scanning, mold-making, and casting techniques to reproduce his designs in crystal quartz resin. The result is a sculptural artwork that feels both historic and modern—layered with paint, gold leaf, and salvaged materials that add texture and depth. His most beloved pieces often feature iconic New Orleans landmarks: the St. Louis Cathedral, St. Patrick’s Church, streetcars, and historic cemeteries—all rendered with intimate detail and artistic reverence.

Currently at 318 Art & Frame, we’re featuring a selection of John Marc’s relief sculptures that celebrate the architectural beauty of Louisiana. His churches are particularly popular—cast in crystal resin, hand-painted, and signed by the artist, they carry a sense of tradition and blessing.

What makes John Marc such a natural fit for 318 is his deep respect for place. His work aligns beautifully with our mission to celebrate Louisiana culture through art. In a region where buildings speak volumes and history lives in the walls, his sculptures serve as elegant tributes—preserving the past while speaking to the present. His pieces offer our customers a tangible connection to the city’s spirit, whether they’re decorating their home or looking for a meaningful gift.

We invite you to experience John Marc Anderson’s work in person at 318 Art & Frame or browse our collection online.
