Artist Spotlight: Abe Negaran – Master of the Toothpick

Erin Ducote

At 318 Art & Frame, we love celebrating artists who bring fresh, unexpected perspectives to the canvas—and Abe Negaran is one of the most fascinating. Known around Baton Rouge as “The Toothpick Guy,” Abe creates stunning, intricate artwork using an unconventional tool: the humble toothpick.

Abe’s journey into the art world is as unique as his technique. Originally trained as an environmental engineer, he later found creative freedom in painting—eschewing brushes altogether and developing his own process of using toothpicks to apply paint. The result? Meticulously detailed textures and patterns that can’t be achieved any other way. Each piece is built line by line, stroke by stroke, making his work instantly recognizable and deeply personal.

From vibrant wildlife and coastal birds to radiant sunbursts and abstract forms, Abe’s work is full of movement, rhythm, and Louisiana soul. His pelicans, crabs, and herons seem to come to life through his layering of color and careful control of texture. Even more impressively, he often experiments by freezing his paint or responding to the music he listens to while working—turning every piece into a one-of-a-kind experience.

Originally from New Jersey and inspired during his time in Egypt, Abe eventually made Baton Rouge his home and launched Abe’s Studios in 2018. Since then, his art has caught the eye of collectors and art lovers across the region. His pieces have been featured in local galleries and spotlights, and we’re honored to have his work available at 318 Art & Frame.

Stop by the gallery to see Abe Negaran’s work in person—you’ll quickly see why one toothpick at a time can make a powerful impact.
